About Melanie
The Thought Lab is run by Mel. Mel is a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist with over 17 year’s experience delivering therapeutic interventions within the NHS. During this time she has supported people with a wide range of psychological difficulties, helping individuals to create meaningful and lasting change in their lives.
Mel has a degree in Applied Psychology and further Cognitive Behavioural Therapy qualifications alongside the diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy. Her work focuses on helping clients understand the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and how making small, manageable changes can lead to significant improvements in wellbeing.
A large part of her career has involved specialist work in addiction and recovery, supporting individuals struggling with substance use and addictive behaviours. This experience has provided a deep understanding of the complex emotional and behavioural patterns that can keep people feeling stuck.
Mel’s therapeutic style is compassionate, non-judgemental and focused on empowering clients to regain control and build healthier coping strategies. She combines a structured evidence-based approach with warmth, empathy and genuine understanding and believes that therapy should be collaborative, supportive and practical.
The Higher Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy that Melanie completed is accredited by NCFE (a government-regulated national examining body) and approved by The British Psychological Society.
Melanie is registered with the National Council of Integrative Psychotherapists.
Melanie also holds a BSc in Applied Psychology and further Cognitive Behavioural Therapy qualifications.
Why CBT + Hypnosis?
A professional journey toward deeper, more lasting change
After years of working with CBT in healthcare settings, Melanie noticed something important: while people could understand new ways of thinking and develop practical strategies, sometimes those insights didn't translate into lasting change when stress hit. The tools were there, but accessing them in the moment could still be difficult.
This observation led her to explore how hypnosis could support the CBT work. Research shows that combining CBT with hypnosis can improve outcomes, and Melanie's experience has confirmed this. The combination addresses change at both levels—the conscious understanding that CBT provides, and the deeper integration that hypnosis facilitates.
What drew Melanie to this approach is its practicality. It's not about abstract theories or lengthy analysis, it's about developing skills and responses that actually work when you need them. The goal is steady, practical progress that you can feel in your everyday life, not just in the therapy room.
For Melanie, this combination represents the best of both worlds: the evidence-based structure of CBT, combined with the deeper integration that hypnosis offers. It's an approach that respects both the conscious mind and the patterns that operate below awareness, acknowledging that lasting change often requires both.
